: : : the basic strings from top to bottom are E, A, D, G. it is eisier to visualize a fretboard for me but...the individual frets go from a-g and repeat. the fourth string (top) starts as F. Now to tell you what the third string starts off as might confuse you so listen up. It is a B flat, which only means that it is below the note B. Notes A-G are not next to each other. I'll type the fourth (top) sting in to help you see this.
F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D# E, F....then it repeats. this is the order on every string, just starting with different notes. Now...sharp like i said are the notes that are not a natural note such as A, B, C, D, E, F, G. There are also flats which is the same thing as a sharp, but it is below the natural note. An unnatural not can be read as a sharp or a flat. An example of this is the fourth string 2nd fret...it can be called an F sharp (#) or a B flat. Like i said you really need a visual or your head starts hurting. Now...I already said what the fourth string (top string) started with. the third string first fret is a B flat. The second string first fret is a E flat. And the 1st string 1st fret is an A flat. remember the order in which the notes go in? So to stress your brain out a little more...what is the 2nd fret on string 1? If your lost try to remember that if the first fret was an A flat...the next is an A. And you might have guessed the 3rd fret...and A sharp, also known as a B flat. Then....you probably got the hang of it now. The 4th fret is a B. Just to let you know....if you were thinking the next is a B sharp...your wrong. Look at the order in which I typed the notes. here i'll type it again. A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#. So the next letter would have to be C. If your totally lost you really need a visual. Try looking up on the internet the fretboard. If you totally memorize it...playing bass will be sooo much easier. Go to taborama.com they have tons of tabs, which is an easy way of reading music. they've also got lessons on how to slap and stuff. well good luck. write me if you need help.
